Can you explain briefly what die cutting is?
Die cutting is when a piece of card along with a die is put through a machine which has 2 rollers and it is the pressure that cuts the shape of of the card.
Is a die the same as a template or a stencil?
No not at all although once the shape is cut out of your card you can leave the card in the die and stencil through with ink to colour pieces of it.
What are dies made of?
Most craft dies are made of metal.
Which die cutting machines can you buy?
There are a lot on the market now such as Spellbinders Grand Calibur, Sizzix Big Shot, eBosser, Cuttlebug and Joy.
What are the differences between these die cutting machines?
Nothing at all they all do the same job apart from some of them take A4 size for example the Grand Calibur, the Big Shot and Joy.
Can you use any die in any die cutting machine?

What is an embossing folder?
It is a folder that has a pattern on it - you put a piece of card in between the folder and put it through a die cutting machine and it’s the pressure that embosses that pattern onto your card.
I’ve heard that some people use Wax Paper in die cutting machines – what is this for?
This is so you can remove your die cut shape of card easily.
Do you have any examples of what sort of card designs you can make with dies?

The Spellbinders D-Lites seem really popular – what is so special about them?
Spellbinders D-Lites are delicate and you can build a picture with these as they are smaller so you can use different ones on the same card.
With Shapeabilities D-Lites craft dies you can use them to cut, emboss and stencil, all with one die.
What are Engraving Art Boards and how do you use them with die cutting machines?
Once you have cut your shape with a die or embossed it with an embossing folder you can then use a sanding block to sand the top layer off which is black to reveal either the gold, copper or silver underneath so you end up with a die cut shape that is two tone colour or a piece of it embossed.
